Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) has been approved for the treatment of heartburn and other symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Class and mechanism: Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) is an antifungal agent that is taken by mouth or applied to the skin. Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) acts by interfering with the ability of fungi to make chemicals called sterols that are an important part of the membrane that surrounds fungal cells and holds them together. This weakens the cell membrane. Oral terbinafine is more effective for treating fungal nail infections than griseofulvin (Fulvicin; Gris-Peg) and itraconazole (Sporanox), two other antifungal agents used for treating fungal nail infections.

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.
Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Protect from light and moisture. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

Take this medication exactly as directed on the label, or as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on the medicine label or on your prescription label.
Take Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) capsules by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the capsules whole with a drink of water; do not crush, break or chew. The capsules can be opened and the contents sprinkled on a small amount of applesauce or yogurt, given with fruit juices, or swallowed immediately with water. Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) works best if taken on an empty stomach. It is best to take the capsules 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
If OVERDOSE occurs seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms of an Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) overdose include drowsiness, blurred vision, fast heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, sweating, headache, or dry mouth.

Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) should not be taken by individuals who have had a history of liver disease, a history of bone marrow or blood cell disorders, or if you take an anti coagulant medication, or if you are currently taking the prescription drug diazepam (Valium).

Serious side effects are rare. Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
• blood in urine
• chest pain or tightness
• dark yellow or brown urine
• fever or sore throat
• pain or difficulty passing urine
• redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
• shortness of breath
• skin rash
• unusual bleeding or bruising
• yellowing of the eyes or skin

Other less serious side effects are more likely to occur, such as:
• stomach pain, gas;
• nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; or
• headache.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Before taking Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole), tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following drugs:
• ampicillin
• diazepam
• digoxin
• disulfiram
• doxercalciferol
• iron salts
• traconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole or other prescription
• medicines for fungus or yeast infections
• phenytoin
• tacrolimus
• warfarin

If you are using any of these drugs, you may not be able to use Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole), or you may need dosage adjustments or special tests during treatment.
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

Heartburn is often confused with the first symptoms of a heart attack. Seek emergency medical attention if you have chest pain or heavy feeling, dizziness, pain spreading to the arm or shoulder, sweating, nausea or vomiting, and a general ill feeling.
Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) is not for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms.
It can take several days of therapy with omeprazole before your stomach condition improves. Check with your prescriber or health care professional if your condition does not improve, or if it gets worse. You can take antacids for the occasional relief of pain unless your prescriber or health care professional tells you otherwise.
